Surface Water Clarification :
Ultrafiltration membranes can be used to replace all conventional clarifying processes, eliminating the need for coagulant and flocculant as well as large clarifying tanks, media and sand filters. Without the need to use large clarifying tanks, one would conserve much valuable land. The system is neat and takes up a very small footprint. For example, a 500m3/day ultrafiltration system takes up only 2.4m x 1.2m of space. It is suitable for treating incoming piped water and all surface water such as reservoirs, lakes, rivers, canals, rain and bore-hole or underground water.


Wastewater Treatment :
By using the ultrafiltration membranes to replace the conventional clarification process, the need to use chemicals such as coagulant and flocculant can be eliminated. The membranes are made of modified hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile. Eliminating the use of chemicals will assist in further savings besides saving on labour as manpower is usually required in the accurate dosing of chemicals required in the conventional water treatment plant.


RO Pre-Treatment :
Ultrafiltration membranes provide excellent pre-treatment to RO because it can consistently deliver filtrate with very low turbidity regardless of the feed water quality. These membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.01 micron are able to remove very small contaminants in the feed water including essentially all suspended solids, colloidal particles as well as bacteria and viruses. High quality and consistent feed water would lead to improve RO system operation including lower operating pressure for a given flux, less frequent membrane cleaning and less risk of plugging the element with suspended solids which in turn protect expensive RO systems and ensure efficient operation.
In addition, compared to conventional pre-treatment methods, which typically incorporate a complex system of coagulation, flocculation, media filtration and cartridge filtration, combined with chemical addition, ultrafiltration systems require less space and often have lower operating costs.
